I was living in an unfinished storage room in the back of my business when I met Marshall Hayes. I was losing money every month, getting divorced, deeply depressed, fifty-pounds overweight, and drinking…a lot.

Today, I’m sober. I’m in the best shape of my life. I’m financially independent, traveling the world, and running my dream business.

The biggest factor in that success was my relationship with Marshall, my mentor, Founder and CEO of Amplio Digital, #182 on the INC 500 Fastest Growing Companies List in 2017.

Here are five things I learned that you can steal, even if you don’t have a mentor.

1. You Can Get a World-Class Mentor (for Free)

We were seeing the same psychologist — that’s how we met. We had dinner. The next day, he came by my business and we talked for two hours.

Here’s how Marshall remembers it:

I was sitting there wondering how you would market this business and how you could maximize revenue. I thought, maybe I could help. And how fun that would be for me.

So, I just asked, “Do you want to talk about how to grow your business? Maybe we could meet for an hour, like once every other week?”

It was no big deal. It was a huge ego boost for me. I had an hour to give. And I was sure I could help.

But what I didn’t expect was how great that would be for me. It was consistently the best part of my week.

It’s my favorite story to tell.

That’s how it started. Simple as that.
