How to Make Peace with Your Inner Critic

If you’re like me, you have a voice in your head.

This voice tells me that I’m not good enough. It tells me all the things that I need to do to be good enough. And it also tells me that if I try, I’ll fail. It tortures me.

I call it my inner critic. Do you have one?

If you do, here’s some good news: you can make peace with it.

I hit a breaking point with my inner critic a few years ago. I realized just how much it popped up, how nasty it was, and how terrible it made me feel. I finally started to see the negative impact that it was having on my life. I was completely unaware of it before then.

I told a friend about my revelation. He said, “Yeah, man. Everybody has that but I’ve never met anyone that’s as hard on themselves as you. It’s actually kinda brutal to be around sometimes.”

“Well, at least I excel in one area,” I said, “Goddammit, there it is again.”
