Alex Mathers Is Blowing Up My Phone
And Changing the Way I Think About Writing and Publishing
Every morning for the last week or two, Alex Mathers has been blowing up my phone. It starts in the morning. I wake up to one or two notifications from Medium — new stories he has published. Late at night, I’m scrolling through Twitter and he’s literally everywhere.
A few weeks ago, I was on a mission. I was researching the top 20 or so writers on Medium and analyzing their sales funnels. I wanted to know a few things: where people find their work, how they get people to their website, how they get their email addresses, and how they make money. I followed each of them on every platform I could, I signed up for newsletters, free courses, everything. Ever since, I’ve been inundated with content.
Alex was one of those people I analyzed. But it wasn’t anything in his sales funnel that jumped out at me. It was how much he writes. Even among the other top 20 writers that I surveyed, he publishes way more than anyone else.
In a recent Tweet, he estimates that he has published about 20,000 pieces of content online over the last 15 years. I’ve only been writing online seriously over the last two years and I’ve only published about 200. That means, Alex is publishing well over 1,000 pieces of content a year and I’m…
