3 Books On Discomfort for a Happier, Healthier, More Balanced Life

If you don’t have time to read any of these books, I think I can save you a few dozen hours of reading in a few short sentences:

Everything in the world is designed to make us comfortable. Our brains are comfort-seeking machines. But comfort does not equal happiness, in fact, sometimes it equals misery. It’s a damn paradox but sometimes, introducing a little discomfort voluntarily can make you more comfortable.

The brain seeks balance between pleasure and pain. We’re all stacking weights on the pleasure side. Adding a few pounds to the pain side by embracing discomfort can bring you back into balance. It can make you happier and healthier — mind, body, and soul.

I can’t pinpoint when it happened but many of us have undergone this Great Flip from scarcity to plenty. Where people used to be killed off by scarcity, we’re increasingly killed off by plenty. And it looks like that trend will continue. Don’t believe me? Google Deaths of Despair.
